Something was not right. So not right.

What had been a normal night spent out jogging had turned into utter and complete hell. Rory felt like her insides were going to explode. Everything was turning upside and down. She'd been thrown to the ground. At one point she'd been screaming. For minutes, what even seemed to have been hours. Eventually the sounds of her own bones breaking had seemingly drowned it out. For her, anyways. Others would probably hear her screams - though she knew no one was going to. No one was coming to help her.

Having collapsed to the ground, her knees struggled against the dirt and her palms slid through it as if trying to escape from the pain. She writhed back and forth as she started...changing. She couldn't believe her own eyes as she saw it. Hair started growing...everywhere. Her body was contorting and she didn't even know what was happening to her. She felt like it had something to do with having been attacked a few weeks back, but couldn't be sure. She wasn't sure of anything at that moment. Hell, she couldn't even think straight, or at all, honestly.

Finally, the pain stopped. And she was only animal. Rory had gone away, leaving only the beast. And the beast was happy to have escaped.

On all fours, she hurtled through the woods at an impeccable speed. An inhuman speed. Leaping over fallen trees and rocks, sliding underneath obstacles in her way, she was a machine.

Suddenly, she halted. A scent hit her nose. Human, three hundred yards away or so. Her canine nose crinkled. She tilted her head back and howled towards the full moon for several minutes. All of the sudden, at once, she sped off towards her prey. A fellow jogger, it turned out to be.

As she saw him, she hurtled herself through the air, aiming to tackle him to the ground and feast.

Her mother had always said, the craziest things in life happen under the full moon...

Somewhere near the city borders of Sunnydale, a motor bike sped in to town. Not just any motor bike, but a Harley Davidson that looked deceptively shiny and new. The rider was not your typical big hairy man with a bandanna and tattoos, but a slimmer man with jeans, green army jacket and shiny black helmet. The man pulled up, his blood pumping from the ride when he heard it – the howl of what any normal person would think was a wolf. But Sam Carter was no ordinary person. Not only did he know about the supernatural world most people tried to ignore, but he sought the evil critters out and killed them. That could have been a normal wolf howl, but somehow Sam doubted it. It could also have belonged to a wolf – human hybrid most people referred to as a werewolf and they were vicious creatures that killed anything in their path. Being careful to park his bike out of site from the road, he took off his helmet and backpack, opened the secret compartment under his seat and pulled a gun out, loading it with silver bullets. Without as much space as say, a car boot, would offer him, he only kept a few weapons there but they covered most of the creatures he'd come across. Guns and sharp knives hurt most creatures, and the stake was the vampires weapon of choice. Silver bullets just topped it off.

“Play time's over, Fido.” Sam quipped to himself as he ran into the woods, running as fast as he could, dodging trees and brambles with the air of a person that had done it a hundred times before. Each place had its own layout and pitfalls though and he almost tripped a few times until he finally arrived at a track where he found the beast encroaching on what looked like a jogger. The guy already had cuts on his face and arm, which lead Sam to believe that the werewolf had already tried to attack the man and that it was moving in for the kill.

“Gooooood doggy.” Sam said to the werewolf as he lined up his shot.......

Sailing through the air the powerful beast made it's target, landing on top of the man whom had been peacefully jogging through the woods. Without a thought in sight - the animal acting purely on instinct - it took the man down and landed with it's paws on the side of the man's torso. The man shrieked and held up his forearms to protect himself as the beast clawed at him. New to the game the werewolf was a bit clumsy and the man managed to shove the wolf away just long enough to slide out from underneath it. Scratched and clawed all over his arms, the man stood up and tried to hike it out of there.

Leaping to all fours, the Wolf took off in pursuit. It sped through the grass and leapt on top of a boulder. Using it in aim to jump down onto the man, it leapt through the air once again. Just as it was closing in a silver bullet struck it in the back. Tumbling to the ground the wolf yelped in pain and it was struck again, this time in the shoulder. Just beside the heart. It'd been close and the wolf was barely still breathing at that point. As all werewolves did when dying, the wolf retreated to it's human form.

And there lied Rory. Naked, bleeding, and unable to move. Her eyes opened wide as she felt the pain moving through her body. Mostly from the bullets, partly from the shift. The man she'd attacked was long gone. Above her, stood the shooter. Above her stood the man that was going to kill her, that she assumed was going to finish her off. She couldn't speak, couldn't move, and simply looked up to him with sadness and pain in her eyes.

She wasn't even aware of what she'd done, only aware that she was going to die. That he would be the last face she'd ever seen - and she couldn't even see him clearly. Her vision blurred, she started to fade in and out of consciousness.

Sam would have liked a little more time to aim and make his shot, but as so often in one of those life or death situations, that was time he could ill-afford. So, as the werewolf leaped to jump on the poor jogger again, Sam shot it, twice. The problem was, while silver was pretty lethal to werewolves you have to hit them in one of the major organs to be sure and Sam was not convinced that he had managed that. Tommy always told him to shoot the thing through the heart, straight and true then get the hell out of there without looking back. All hunters knew the werewolf reverted back to its original form when it was seriously injured, perhaps as a defence mechanism that caused the hunter to feel sorry for what would then look more like a victim than a savage beast. Tommy told him it was best to kill the thing first time round without seeing the fallen body and thereby having a fallen beast on their conscience rather than the reality of it being a person, whose only crime was being unlucky enough to get bit. Somehow actually seeing the person made it that little bit more real.

This time, Sam had no choice, though. He had not hit it straight and true, the beast had been too unpredictable, his shot a little off and now he had to do the hard bit. The jogger had already ran off with barely a backward glance. That was not unusual. Terror often trumped gratitude in occasions like that. *Don't look, just shoot. Don't look, just shoot.* Sam told himself. He couldn't help it though and the sight startled him. This was no gruff man with wolf-like features but a rather attractive young girl. An attractive butt-naked young girl. Sam steeled himself and pointed his gun directly at her heart, his finger itching near the trigger. As much as he tried to be 'professional' about it though, he couldn't get the job done. Something was stopping him from pulling the trigger, perhaps the little voice in his head that told him that she should be given a chance to see if she could control the beast, even if it meant locking herself up a few nights a month. Maybe it was because she was just so damn cute. Tommy was right, Sam grudgingly admitted. Seeing the body made it a lot harder.

”Damn it!!” Sam cursed himself, as he put the gun away, and took off his green army jacket to cover the girl up before lifting her up and carrying her through the trees toward his bike. This was where having a bike over a car made life just a little bit harder – getting her to hospital quickly that way would be extremely hard indeed, so instead he called 911 to get an ambulance to her. They told him one would be there within minutes, which should have been his cue to leave, if he didn't want any problems with the law, but something about the girl stopped him from doing even that. Sighing, he shook the girl a little hoping to get her conscious.

”Hey! It's going to be OK! An ambulance is on its way.” he said to her.

[QUOTE=AURORA "RORY" SNOW,Dec 2 2013, 10:04 PM]

Barely conscious, Rory stared up at the man above her with frightened eyes. When she saw the gun pointed at her heart she felt a mixture of confusion and fear. She didn't know what had happened to her or why he was doing this. All she remembered was jogging and then excruciating pain. Again more pain, and now she awoke to see someone pointing a gun right at her. It was needless to say that she was scared...

A few tears slid down her cheeks but she was unable to speak. Paralyzed by her fear and confusion all she could do was stare at the man. She saw his lips moving but couldn't make out the words. Before she'd realized what was happening, he was carrying her.

Shaken to a bit more conscious state, she looked up into the eyes of her killer. Her killer that had apparently called an ambulance for her.

Now she was even more confused.

However, she wasn't going to question it. Forcing her head to nod, a weak one at that, she was laid down on the ground by the man. As found her consciousness a bit more she pulled away from his touch, still fearful. After all - the man had shot her from what she could tell. The pain that shot through her body was now forcing her into shock. Her skin grew paler and her breathing was barely there at all.

Finally, she spoke, all she could muster. "Why?" she croaked, tears flying freely as she struggled to stay on this plane. Her eyes, normally brown, were flashing yellow. Yellow, brown. Yellow, brown, as the beast threatened to return to it's natural form. While she didn't notice it, she noticed the look on the man's face.

Lying there helpless and dying, her memories slowly started coming back to her. While she couldn't remember everything clearly she could remember attacking a man. Not the man whom had saved her, but someone else. "Is - is he okay?" she asked shakily, yellow/brown flickering eyes looking out into the distance for the victim. He was no where in sight.

Her head slumped back and laid against the pavement, unable to hold it up any longer. Off in the distance she heard the sirens and only hoped they'd move quickly - she could feel herself fading in and out.

The girl seemed to come round a bit as they waited for the ambulance. She seemed a little disorientated and confused, but she was awake and that was a good thing. What wasn't so good was the first question she asked – why? It was the most awkward question she could ask as it would involve telling her about the supernatural world that most people were ignorant of and he didn't think she could handle that or the reality of what happened to her in such a delicate state.

”Kind of a long story.” he admitted. [“And not one I think I should tell you right now, miss. Needless to say....back there you weren't exactly yourself. And believe it or not....well, I'm here to protect people and sometimes that means I have to do a few unsavoury things. Sorry about that.”[/b] he said lamely. ”Look, as soon as you've healed and you're all better, I promise to explain everything properly to you. Once you're stronger.....you know, if you can stand to have me around at that point that is....”

It was at that point the beast tried to resurface. The yellow eyes came out and it was enough for Sam to edge back a little and reach for his gun again. It didn't last though, so Sam relaxed again. Fortunately that seemed to jog the girls memory, which was odd because that rarely happened. Normally the human side of the wolf wouldn't remember anything. They might spot clues – gaps in their memory, torn clothes, waking up naked with dried blood on them and then there would be the news reports about a wolf on the rampage that might help them put two and two together. Perhaps it was because the wolf was still close to the surface that she was just about able to remember snippets.

”He's fine.” Sam reassured her. ”A bit shaken up and a little worse for wear, but he'll live. The sirens indicated that the ambulance wasn't far off. Not only that, but the girl was close to losing consciousness once again. ”Look you need to know that I shot you for a reason. To stop you from hurting people. If you don't get me in trouble with the police, I'll explain to you what happened properly and help you control your....err...condition. My name's Sam. What's yours?”

Long story? Heh. If she hadn't been in so much pain she might have laughed sarcastically. "I - I have time" she said, a twinge of hope and disbelief of whether she did actually have time or not in there, too. A sarcastic laugh ended up coming out anyways despite not wanting it to - causing her to groan as the pain soured through and accompanied it. Maybe she didn't have much time after all.

Once she healed? Call her a cynic but she didn't see this as a papercut. This wasn't something that would just heal. No, Rory was pretty sure she was going to die. At only eighteen years old, too. So much she hadn't done.

Despite him having just shot her - she couldn't help but feel as if he was being truthful. That he hadn't really wanted to hurt her. "What was I?" she asked, her voice barely audible due to how weak she was at the moment. She was losing blood. A lot of it, and fast.

Another weak nod. As she allowed her head to fall back, it nearly slammed down onto the pavement of the road. "D - Did I hurt him?" she asked, teary eyes becoming worse by the second with the realization of what had actually happened. Between what he'd just told her and what she could deduce on her own, she assumed she'd attacked the man, and Sam had attacked her to protect the man. Or at least that's what seemed to have happened - everything was still blurry.

"I didn't mean to.." she muttered, closing her eyes for a moment and allowing the weight to seep out of her muscles as she relaxed on the ground. At this point, the shock had spread throughout her entire body and she was just cold. She shivered.

Rory nodded, though she still didn't fully believe him, he had called an ambulance for her. "Rory" she whispered. She rarely, if ever, used her given name of Aurora.

As the sirens closed in, the ambulance closed in on them, parking in the middle of the road. Lights flashing, siren roaring. They pulled the gurney out of the ambulance and wheeled it over to her. With two men, they lifted her on top of it. "What happened to her?" they asked Sam, who she'd assume say he'd simply found her in the woods. Or at least, hoped he would. She wanted to believe him, which meant not getting him locked away forever.

The men rolled her up the ramp and into the ambulance and started plugging stuff into her body. Wires, a cardio tracking thingy-ma-bobber, and all sorts of other meds. One of the EMT's leaned out of the truck and gestured to Sam. "Sir, are you going with her?"

Sam nodded. ”You did hurt him. But not badly, just a few cuts and bruises, really.” Sam said. OK they were big ass cuts and it could quite easily have been a lot worse, but Sam didn't want to get into that right then.

”I know you didn't mean to.” Sam said gently. ”Rory. Pretty name.” it was at that point the ambulance turned up. The head guy talked to Sam, while the others loaded Rory onto a stretcher and put her into the back of the ambulance.

”Not sure.” Sam lied. Fortunately he was a good, convincing liar. Tricks of the trade. ”I was just on my way into town when I found her crawling out of the woods and onto the road. She going to be OK?”

“Touch and go at the moment sir, she's been hurt pretty bad.

“Sir, are you going with her?” another man asked.

Sam looked over at his bike. Then over to the ambulance. He didn't want to leave Rory, but if the police scoped out the area, he had some incriminating evidence in his bike. It wasn't hidden enough to survive a thorough search, if such a thing happened there. The fact that the ambulance men pretty much took his story at face value told him that this sort of thing, or something close to it was a regular occurrence. Or at least regular enough for them to have stopped asking questions.

”I'll follow you on the bike.” Sam informed them, quickly going up to the back of the ambulance so he could try to speak to Rory directly. ”I'll be there, at the hospital I promise. You're going to be OK.” The other medic patted Sam on the back and with that Sam went over to retrieve his bike, quickly putting on his helmet, turning on the engine and shot off after the ambulance, parking in the visitors car park once they got there. After a brief conversation with receptionist, he was sent over to where Rory was taken. They were apparently freeing up an operating room for her.

”Hey.” he said to her. ”Told you I'd be here. I don't have much time, I think they want to operate on you pretty quick, but I'll be here when you wake up.....is there anyone you want me to call?” Sam didn't know why he was so insistent on sticking by her, it wasn't exactly like him. Maybe it was the constant promises he was making her or just plain old fashioned guilt. Either way, he wasn't leaving there until he she was OK.

The last thing she remembered was Sam telling her that he'd meet her at the hospital. Which she had actually tried to protest, though, hadn't had the strength too. Nice guy or not - he'd still shot her and her instincts weren't so keen on him coming to "visit". Nonetheless, as she passed out on the gurney and was transported to the hospital, she dreamed of the beast. It wasn't a memory, but a dream.

The wolf ripped through the woods, tearing anyone it came across to pieces. She was absolutely terrified and she wasn't sure if she was the beast or not. Watching from above, she wanted to scream as it ripped the people apart, but no words came from her lips. All she could do was watch.

And that's when she woke up screaming, in the hospital. The nurses held her down as she struggled against them, though her strength was no match for her. She was attached to a bunch of wires, needles, and tubes.

They injected her with a tranquilizer and she fell asleep once again, falling into the dreams of the beast. Again, she woke up terrified. This time however more used to it, and the screams were less.

In front of the bed stood Sam and quite frankly, she was a bit surprised that he'd actually come. She didn't greet him back, but only looked up to him with tears in her eyes. "My mom.." she muttered, one weak arm lifting up to point to the phone in her room. "321-8313" she said quietly, watching him walk over to the phone. As he made his way over there, the same weak arm grabbed ahold of his and looked up into his eyes, fearful. "S - Sam...She's a cop" she told him in warning, again, not sure why she felt the need to protect him. Nonetheless, a couple of the nurses came into her room to prep her for surgery.

Notes: Do you want to end after she goes into surgery, and have one with her getting out of the hospital? And just say he stayed with her while she was in there? Let me know, up to you!

Despite all the waiting around to see Rory, Sam could not so much as sit down or pick up a magazine. When he managed to get to see her, before she would go into surgery she seemed none to pleased to see him, although who would want to see the person that shot them again, good reason or not?

”Sure.” Sam said quickly as Rory responded to his offer of making a phone call by asking for her mum. She was still young so that didn't necessarily mean there wasn't a man already in her life but it was promising. Then, Sam inwardly criticized himself for even thinking about that. Not even thinking about the 10 year-ish age gap, she was a werewolf and he was a hunter and that sort of thing only worked out in fairy tales. Just as he was about to go over to the phone, Rory grabbed a hold of his arm to tell him the fateful news. Great. It wasn't like he hadn't been in precarious positions with the law before, it was one of the pitfalls of being a hunter, he didn't actively seek it out.

”Thanks for letting me know.” he said. [/b]”Look I don't even know if you want me to stick around, but it would probably be a good idea to make myself scarce while she's here. And I know I still owe you an explanation once you're out of surgery, I haven't forgotten.”[/b] Sam said, before making the phone call.

”She'll be here as soon as possible.” Sam informed her, sitting down on the seat next to her bed. Judging by the actions of the medical staff, they would be moving her soon. ”Listen, like I said, it's probably a good idea for me to vamoose while your mum's here, but I'm not abandoning you. Here.” Sam said, quickly writing down his number on a piece of paper and handing it to her. ”When you're....you know, free, and want to be filled in on the whole story, call me. I'll still be in town for the next few days at least. You'll be fine in there, but good luck anyway.” Sam said getting up, ready to go. Perhaps she would give her mother his phone number and details. Sam hoped that, even if it was merely down to curiosity about knowing what happened, she would not get him into trouble and thereby ruin their budding, albeit strained friendship.

Note: Other than the staying part, that works for me! She can just phone him and he can meet her, so as not to fall foul of mommy dearest smile.gif
